Wonders of the Modern World

Starting with a re-reading of Fischer von Erlach’s groundbreaking „Entwurff einer historischen Architektur“, students were requested to look at contemporary landscapes and rituals with a new innocence. Long forgotten topics such as the ritual interpretation of territory, monumentality, collective memory, the sense of death have been proposed as the starting point for a simple design exercise: the fictional description of the catholic sanctuary of Csíksomlyó (Șumuleu Ciuc) in Romania. The place hosts one of the largest religious events in Eastern Europe, as every year around 70000 people gather on a large clearing among the hills. Each student was asked to produce a drawing in Fischer’s original format (42,5 x 53,5 cm), and a model describing the territory and its interpretation in the festive ritual.
