The University of Applied Arts Vienna (Expanded Museum Studies), the Vienna University of Technology (Interior Architecture and Design) and the Wien Museum cordially invite you to the presentation of the results of the project-based seminar “Bezirksmuseum” from the 2025/26 winter semester. As part of this interdisciplinary course, students developed proposals for adaptations and redesigns for selected Viennese district museums.
Through drawings, models and texts, they explore the specific collections, spatial contexts and social issues associated with these museums.
Since the 1920s, Vienna’s district museums have been dedicated to researching and communicating local history. Their collections – many of which originated from private donations – offer diverse perspectives on urban life and collective memory. The museums are located in a wide variety of settings: in administrative buildings, residential complexes or a former fire station. At the same time, they exemplify current issues relating to accessibility, visibility, representation and participation in the cultural sphere.
The models on display explore how local history can be communicated today, what audiences district museums reach, and how their presence in everyday life and urban culture could be strengthened. To this end, the students are devising new spatial, curatorial and communicative approaches, highlighting the potential of district museums as venues for local cultural memory.
