Design Studio What is a Studio House?

WHAT IS A STUDIO HOUSE?
LOCATION: VISIT TO SELECTED STUDIOS AND STUDIO HOUSES

This designing gives you the opportunity to use artistic-scientific methods for research and site surveys. For this design project, we have selected studios and studio buildings in Vienna as places where ‒ employing these methods ‒ we will explore aspects of space. In this process we will not only focus on the house type of the studio building, but also on the conceptuality and history of this form of workspace. We will visit both studios of individual artists and studio buildings that offer space for several artists to work. We will look at the similarities and differences between architectural offices and artists’ studios. Visiting historic studio buildings and repurposed office or school buildings that are used as studios will also help students to refine their projects. We ask students to keep a drawing diary to document and work on our research walks. In this design course, students have the opportunity to explore a wide range of artistic practices. They can research various media such as performance, video, drawing, collage and photography for their project in order to develop a spatial model. A central element of this course will be the presentation and documentation of the works. Discussions and reflection sessions during the semester give students the opportunity to learn more about the type of the studio, its conceptual history and its potential. Students can try out artistic-scientific work and use it to formulate a thesis on space with regard to the topic of the studio. The newly learned working methods can then be related to the methods of investigating space and designing space in one’s own practice.
