WHAT IS THE DESIGN PROJECT “EXHIBITING. EXHIBITION SPACE OF THE FUTURE”?
LOCATION: VIENNA – EXISTING BUILDINGS AND CONTEMPORARY ART AS A STARTING POINT
This design project is dedicated to the architectural conception of an exhibition space. The title “Exhibiting. Exhibition Space of the Future” deliberately suggests that we will not only engage with 20th-century and contemporary art, but also develop concepts for exhibiting that go beyond these.
There are two design objectives: first, an intensive exploration of artistic practice and the act of exhibiting in order to develop concrete exhibition architectures; building on these exhibition architectures, the second design objective is to transform an existing building in Vienna into an exhibition space as part of an architectural design. Based on the existing building structure, renovation and expansion will create an exhibition space that meets the specific requirements of contemporary exhibition practice.
What spatial configurations enable exhibitions that do justice to the breadth of media production in contemporary art? How can an existing building be architecturally reimagined in such a way that it becomes a long-term venue for exhibiting art while also anticipating future developments?
Methods:
In parallel with the analysis of the existing building using working models, the exploration of artistic practice and exhibition-making will also shape the methodology of the semester. An examination of selected artistic positions and exhibition concepts serves as an introduction to the design process for the students. Over the course of the semester, they are invited to visit as many contemporary art exhibitions as possible and to engage with the history of exhibition-making. In addition to the exhibition architecture designs and working models, precise drawings and visualizations of the projects will also be produced by the end of the semester. The goal is to enrich students’ own range of architectural methods with artistic approaches that can meet the high demands of realistic renovation projects.
