Design Studio Brioni Display – Staging of an Island + Exkursion Brioni

In every moment of its eventful history, the island Brioni appears as a stage and exhibition. What identity does the island have today and in the future? This question combines program and space, use and design. Visual art and landscape architecture create two perspectives on space that become an integral part of the design. Display refers to the preservation, selection and exhibition of things and contexts. With designs for a Brioni display, we approach the island from a contemporary perspective to give its historical depth a spatial future.

Brijuni / Brioni
The Adriatic archipelago is part of Croatia; previously it was part of Yugoslavia, Italy until the end of the Second World War and Austria in the 19th century until the end of the Habsburg Empire; before that it was part of the Serenissima Republic of Venice for centuries; archaeological excavations also bear witness to thousands of years of pre-Christian, including Roman, settlement. Today, the archipelago is not permanently inhabited, but has been a national park since 1980, and from 1947-1980 it was the political summer residence and zoo of the Yugoslavian head of state Tito; from 1900-1930 it was the object of an avant-garde and ultimately failed tourism venture by the Viennese industrialist family Kupelwieser. In every moment of its eventful history, the unusual island appears as a stage and exhibition: Tito’s political stage during the founding of the Non-Aligned Movement with the reception of important heads of state such as Nehru and Nasser on the island in 1956; exhibition as an animal park and nature reserve, as an archaeological display with the tourist development of its nature and history.

Brioni Display
What identity does the island have today and in the future? This question combines program and space, use and design. Architecture, understood as landscape and stage, creates a perspective on the shape and history of the island that sees its challenge not primarily in building, but in space. Visual art and landscape art create two perspectives on space that become an integral part of the design.
Curatorial architecture aims less at solving building tasks than at the careful handling of the existing, at the careful transformation of our natural and cultural environment. Socio-political contexts are addressed and changed through spatial settings. Display refers to the preservation, selection and exhibition of things and contexts. With designs for a Brioni display, we approach the island from a contemporary perspective to give its historical depth a spatial future.

Teaching methods

In the tension between observation and design, the artistic techniques of appropriation and representation of what is observed and designed play a central role as a tool: a model is a working model, a drawing is a tool, each step is documented and at the end part of the semester work. Continuous attendance and participation in the excursion are therefore mandatory requirements for the students.
This design studio leads to a series of visual and textual representations that are carried out during the semester. These include models, drawings, diagrams, photographs, films, essays and interviews. In parallel with the research and design phases of the studio, students are asked to prepare lectures.
