WHAT IS “ARTIST IN RESIDENCE”?
LOCATION: VIENNA – EXISTING BUILDINGS AS A STARTING POINT
This design course is dedicated to the architectural concept of a residential and studio building for artists. The course title “Artist in Residence” deliberately plays with the well-known term, but does not refer to temporary living as part of a scholarship program, but rather to historical models such as artist in residence zoning in New York’s SoHo in the 1970s: artists live and work long-term in a place that offers space for concentrated production but also for exchange and publicity.
The starting point is specific existing buildings in Vienna, which are spatially analyzed by the students and transformed as part of an architectural design. Based on the existing building fabric, new living and working spaces are created through conversions and additions that meet the specific requirements of contemporary artistic practice.
How can living and working be combined under one roof? What spatial configurations enable productive work processes and at the same time high-quality, permanent living? How can an existing building be architecturally rethought in such a way that it becomes a long-term functioning place for artistic life?
Teaching Methods:
Parallel to the analysis of the existing building stock on the basis of large-scale working models, the engagement with artistic practice should also influence the semester in terms of methodology. An examination of certain selected artistic positions serves as an introduction to the design process for the students. Over the course of the semester, they are invited to transfer these approaches to architectural thinking and designing and to explore the spatial, functional and typological potential of this transfer. In addition to the working models, precise drawings and visualizations of the projects should also be produced at the end of the semester. The aim is to enrich the students’ own range of architectural methods with artistic approaches that can meet the high demands of realistic conversion projects..
