Transformation eines Kärntner Stadels

This thesis covers the typology and development of farmhouses in Carinthia, with a focus on their barns. The goal of the research is to provide a comprehensive overview of the various characteristics, special aspects and regional differences of old farmhouses and barns in Carinthia. An essential part of this work is the detailed documentation of a barn typical for Lower Carinthia in Maria Rain. It serves as the basis for the development of a re-use concept for a residential and studio building with the aim of revitalizing existing structures and putting them to contemporary use. The examination of the typology of Carinthian barns shows that they have their unique structural and aspects in each of Carinthia‘s regions. The preservation and careful conversion of these buildings contribute to the protection of the cultural heritage and also reduce the land consumption that would result from new construction projects. The project is intended to preserve the barn in Maria Rain largely unchanged in its external appearance and proportions, while implementing a new use inside. The new use should only be recognizable from the outside through selected, subtle interventions in order to unite the historical substance with a modern function.
